Underground Fossils was an indie rap focused blog run by myself (Dimxsk) and by Trylemma, who passed August 3rd, 2024 from liver failure of unknown origin at the age of 34. We mostly posted week or twice weekly, the bulk of which were rare rips we made, found on old blogs, he acquired through his insanely broad connection to the scene, etc. We did all we could to make sure we didn't post stuff that (1) You could still reasonably buy from the artist directly, (2) You could reasonably buy secondhand for cheap, (3) You could download easily elsewhere, (4) The artist(s) asked us not to for any reason. Being involved in this blog was some of the most fun I ever had, even if at times it was time consuming, challenging or intimidating (having a readership). It was the product of one of the best friendships I've ever had. If I could say one last thing, it's to encourage all of you: if you have the time and desire, make your own UGF. Find a friend who loves this shit like you do and build it together. It will bring you incredible joy, enhance your connection to this amazing community, and change your life in unexpected and exciting ways. I know it did mine. Love you all!

Factor Chandelier - Hi Way Mix Vol. 1 (2004)

Today's upload is from the GOAT producer himself, Factor Chandelier and his "Hi Way Mix Vol. 1" from 2004 (back when he was just Factor, post Factor G!)

"Hi Way Mix Vol. 1" is a DJ mix that Factor dropped in the early days of Side Road Records. The mix includes classic joints from the likes of Blackalicious, Living Legends, Busdriver, Ellay Khule, Myka 9, OutKast, Jaylib, Felt, Bored Stiff, LMNO, and many others. We also get a couple exclusives including a live version of Paranoid Castle's "Dirty Dancin" and a freestyle from the great M.Phasis (over Jaylib.)

The mix is super dope and gives you a picture of what Factor came up on. To my knowledge, no other installments were made. Props to scene group b2r for making the original rip. Peep below!

soso - Poor Man’s Survey (2004)

Thanks for tuning in again folks, and as promised I've upped my game and delivered some fresh music on time. 30 minutes or it's free, so send me money. Just kidding.

That important bit out of the way, what we have here is a collection of some beats by someone who is probably one of my favorite musicians as well as rappers. I don't really weight what he does against any other rappers to be fair, because his level of originality, compositional ingenuity and absolutely brutal emotional songwriting puts his music on a level that's almost it's own genre.

soso's album Poor Man's Survey is a collection of  instrumentals, mostly songs with fellow prairie rap god Epic made 'as a companion piece to soso's 7"' according to a Discoger. It's pretty damn good, soso's production is absolutely fantastic with or without lyrical accompaniment. It's stark and dark and somehow sums up what I imagine a Canadian winter to sound like so perfectly...

Why am I sharing this today? Because I'm so f*cking stoked to be hearing a new vocal album from the man himself, with super producer Maki out at the end of the month. Go ahead and preorder it here if you're in the State's and here if you're not, or want to get a physical. Check out the links at the bottom of Mism's page for sources.

Enjoy, soso is peerless and I guarantee you'll love some of this at least.

Asthma and Reese's Pieces - S/T (?)

This week we have a pretty obscure little project from Saskatoon, SK, Canada to share - Asthma and Reese's Pieces' self titled EP.

I recently had the chance to cop some stuff from Saskatoon legend Epic's personal music collection. When we were going through stuff, he told me that his brother (actual legal brother that is) had a project and asked if I wanted it. It was of course an immediate "yes" from me, and the product was "Asthma and Reese's Pieces." Asthma is Epic's brother, who I only know elsewhere from having a song on the Epic and Nomad collabo album. I have no idea who Reese's Pieces is.

The 5 track EP sounds very indie and packs a pretty hard punch. Both of the guys are skilled rappers technically and have a lot to say regarding Canadian politics and their personal lives at the time (though I'm not quite sure when "at the time" was, there's no date on the project.) There's no track titles included.

Peep the project below!
