Underground Fossils was an indie rap focused blog run by myself (Dimxsk) and by Trylemma, who passed August 3rd, 2024 from liver failure of unknown origin at the age of 34. We mostly posted week or twice weekly, the bulk of which were rare rips we made, found on old blogs, he acquired through his insanely broad connection to the scene, etc. We did all we could to make sure we didn't post stuff that (1) You could still reasonably buy from the artist directly, (2) You could reasonably buy secondhand for cheap, (3) You could download easily elsewhere, (4) The artist(s) asked us not to for any reason. Being involved in this blog was some of the most fun I ever had, even if at times it was time consuming, challenging or intimidating (having a readership). It was the product of one of the best friendships I've ever had. If I could say one last thing, it's to encourage all of you: if you have the time and desire, make your own UGF. Find a friend who loves this shit like you do and build it together. It will bring you incredible joy, enhance your connection to this amazing community, and change your life in unexpected and exciting ways. I know it did mine. Love you all!

Von Poe VII - Von Poe VII (2012)

Well I felt bad so here's something. I already have done a few writeups on Riverside rapper Poetic Death aka Von Poe VII so you can search the tag if you're curious about this particular artist. He's dope and has lots of great albums that are ridiculously hard to find. Goldmine for a blog like this, unless he decides he doesn't want these out there which I will of course respect.

Very Serious Announcement / Pesticyde & Poetic Death - Aftermathmatikz (2008)

 BIG CHANGES AT UGF!

Hey ya'll, so excited to share a monumental moment in the history of Underground Fossils and the world at large. Trylemma and I have been discussing this move for a while and figured the new month would be a great time to debut it... Welcome... to...

Underground Fossils: The Fossil Blog

So instead of hip hop, from this day forward UGF will be all about fossils, all the time. Any discussion of music will not be tolerated. This is serious. This is rock solid. This is history.

No more wasting your valuable time with posts about new releases you might not have heard about. Everyone knows the radio does a fine job of picking your music for you. No more free downloads either. To be honest, why would you waste disc space on anything that isn't related to fossils? And especially no more April Fool's jokes, because we all know nobody reads these and if they do they don't think they're funny.

Look at the beauty. Feel the time, frozen in rock. Waiting to be unearthed. The heart pounding excitement of a bazillion years sitting quietly in mud, dead.

The only music we want to hear is the sound of petrification of ancient plants, accompanied by the back beat of chisels freeing them from their stone prisons.

For the next few hours we will be removing all material related to music. When you next log on, prepare to take a very educational trip back in time through the magic of fossils...

Seriously?? You want a download? Alright. Don't tell anyone though, I swear this is a one time thing...

This one is an early release from Riverside native emcee Poetic Death (nka Von Poe VII) over beats by Pesticyde. You might have this one if you knew about these folks back when it was on Bandcamp.

I've done a few Poe albums I believe so I'll skip the lengthy descriptions. To be quick, expect conscious rap musings with obscure biblical references over melancholy eerie music.

Poetic Death (nka Von Poe VII) - Death to the Shogun: Chapter 3 (2012)

Someone expressed an interest in hearing material from Von Poe VII, and given his extensive list of no longer available yet dope music, I figured I'd offer up one of my personal favorites of his from just before he changed his name.

Starting out while still in high school, Poe has come a long way since he dropped 2006's The Atma Within. This last entry of his Death to the Shogun series is a great place to start getting familiar with his vision as an artist, a hard to define lyrical style and content that I guess could almost be called dark conscious. Eerie, melodic and at times brutal, this 30 track album has some seriously dope production and guest lyricists as varied as Vice Versa (nka Carmine Moth), Vida Killz and even the mighty Mr. Lif.

Poe may not be for everyone, but he made my Top 10 list of rappers of the decade, and I predict at least some of you may agree.
